Both hearing and listening are activities related to the use of Ear, but there is a significant difference between the two activities. Hearing is just an activity for sensing noise or sound waves involving the ear, but listening requires attention or use of mind with the ear. In a general way, hearing is an involuntary process, whereas listening is voluntary.
In our daily lives, we hear something almost all day. It can be anything, ticking of a clock, sounds of vehicles running on the roads, the noise of playing children, a person not related to us talking in our near around and so no. These all are real-life examples of hearing.
On the other hand, listening is what we want to understand. For example, a truck tire blast in front of our house, we pay attention to understand what sound it was. While listening to music, pay attention to understand lyrics, in a meeting, pay concentration to understand what discussion is going on, while talking to our dear and near the one we pay attention. These all hare the example of listening.
For example, Robert heard a sound of the blast while playing in the ground. Here, Robert was not paying attention, he suddenly got a sense of sound wave.
Misha listen to her teacher carefully. Here, Misha pays attention to what her teacher says with attention and full concentration.
As a service provider, I have encountered a situation where it made a difference in listening and hearing. When I call a customer for my service, most of them hardly pay attention, but in contrast, when a customer wants the answer to any queries, they listen to me carefully.
