A recurring theme throughout this portion of the chapter is that a given ecological or functional role often is spread across many lineages of proteobacteria.

This is interesting:

Did  each role evolve many separate times across the Proteobacteria, is SSU rDNA tree wrong, or is there widespread horizontal gene transfer for ecological function? Think about this and give your best answer below.

Answer #1

As per my knowledge, it would be horizontal gene transfer for the ecological function. This is because in bacteria, it has been seen that the process of antibitotic resistance in bacteria occurs via transmission of DNA from parents to offspring and this an important role in the evolution of ecological functions in bacteria. Also, it is through horizontal gene transfer that exchange of genetic material across genera in bacteria is possible that leads to different kinds of ecological functions in bacteria.
