A circular wire wrapped 9 times with a radius of 0.4 m is placed in the x-y plane. A current of 6 amps runs counter-clockwise around the wire. What is the magnetic moment of the wire in A m2 and its direction? Include a negative sign for the -z direction and a positive sign for the +z direction.

Answer #1

For the direction of magnetic moment, follow Right Hand Thumb Rule i.e. Curl the fingers of your right hand in the direction of the current flow. Your thumb points into the direction of the magnetic moment.

Therefore, here the direction of magnetic moment will be in +z direction.

Magnetic Moment, M = + NIA (here + sign is for +z direction)

where N= no of turns = 9

A = Area of cross section of loop = πr2 = 3.14*(0.4)2 m2 = 0.5024 m2

I = current through wire = 6 A

Therefore,

M = + 9*6*0.5024 Am2

M = + 27.1296 Am2
