I've been debating with a classmate about whether an object will roll or slide down a friction-less incline. I contend that weight will be unable to produce a torque since it acts at the COM which is the pivot point (therefore r = 0). My classmate contends that the pivot point is actually at the point of contact between the sphere and the surface. Further, she contends that since the COM is not over the base of support the sphere will rotate. Can you help clear this up?
