Genetics: What is the expected phenotype of the following mutants, either inDrosophila melanogaster or in Arabidopsis thaliana? (i) Overexpression of both bicoid and nanos in a female fly. (ii) Overexpression of the homeotic gene, antennapedia, in a female fly lacking hunchback. (iii) Deletion of the pair-rule gene, even-skipped, in a male fly overexpressingnanos. (iv) Overexpression of the Class A gene, APETALA1, in a plant lacking the Class B gene, APETALA3. (v) Overexpression of the Class C gene, AGAMOUS, in a plant lacking the Class E gene, FBP2.

Answer:

  • I): Overexpression of bicoid and manos in female fly result cause gaps in the segmentation pattern and may results in loss of unsegmented extremities of the organism.
  • II): Antennapedia is usually used to specify second thoracic segment of the fly.
  • But mutation in antennapedia results in legs rather than antenna grow out of head.
  • III): Deletion of pair rule gene usually delete portions of alternate segments.
  • IV) Overexpression of class A genelacking Class B results tformation of Carp- carp-carp-carp.
  • V): Overexpression of class c gene in plant lacking E gene results in sepl-petal-petal-sepl.
