The story is about Late Sergio Marchionne, the ex-CEO for FIAT – Chrysler. When Marchionne accepts the leadership position, both the companies were at the brink of bankruptcy. The employees accepted the leader however they were all highly de-motivated because they thought that the company would be shut down and they would be laid-off. Marchionne used situational leadership style in this situation. Considering the plight of the employees, he first assured them that they will not be laid off and that together they can turn the table around. His action and speech motivated the employees. He forego his luxurious cabin and took up a regular cabin among the employees. Marchionne’s simple and elegant style was very impressive. He had many followers because of his management style. Workers looked upon him with respect. Marchionne adapted to the four styles under situational leadership, namely directing, coaching, supporting and delegating. He directed and delegated authority to his newly elected managers. He provided coaching and support to the managers to innovate and create new models with advanced technologies. He supported the employees at all times. His effective communication skills made him to take charge of the sensitive situation. He motivated and encouraged them and this changed the culture in the whole organization. The result was that the two auto making companies are now successful in making profits and they have become leaders in manufacturing.
