a. Predict A paper clip will be suspended from a string inside a Styrofoam cup surrounded by aluminum foil. Predict what will happen to the paperclip when a charged rod is brought near the cup.

b. Predict what will happen when one of the poles of the magnet is brought near the cup?

c. Experimental setup Carry out the experiments described in a and b. Describe your observations. Were your predictions correct? Do you know why?

d. Interpret Based on your observations in part a, b, and c, are the poles of a magnet the same as net positive and net negative charge? Explain.

Answer #1

Assuming the paper clip is made of steel,

a) the paper clip won't be affected by this charged rod when it is brought near the cup.

Reason: as the cup is covered with aluminum foil, which is a conductor, the space inside the foil is electrostatically shielded.

b) the paper clip will be attracted towards the magnet.

Reason : aluminium permits the magnetic field lines to pass through it. So being a magnetic material, stell clip will be attracted.

c) experiment.

The results will be the same mentioned above.

d) no. The poles of magnet is not similar to north and south poles of a magnet.

- Magnetic mono poles doesn't exist. But charges do exist.

- electric field lines originate at +ve charge and terminate at negative charge. But magnetic field lines are closed loops.

- a moving charge produces both magnetic and electric fields. But a magnet can produce only magnetic field.
