Answer #1

We know that

time = distance/Velocity

Velocity = 17 km/sec = 17000 m/sec

distance between proxima centauri and earth = 1.3 pc

Since 1 pc = 1 parsec = 3.086*10^16 m

So,

time = 1.3*3.086*10^16 m/(17000 m/sec)

time = 2.36*10^12 sec

Now we know that 1 yr = 3.154*10^7 sec

So,

time = 2.36*10^12 sec*(1 yr/(3.154*10^7 sec)) = 74785 yr

Since currently we are in 1977, So the year it will reach Proxima centauri will be = 1977 + 74785 = 76762 yr

    ANSWER 3A, B, AND C! 3. The star system that is closest to the earth is Alpha Centauri. It is 4.37 light years away in Earth's reference frame. The fastest spacecraft humans have ever launched is New Horizons, which sent us sweet pictures of Pluto in 2015. It attained a speed of 45 km/s relative to the sun. That's fast, but even at this rate, interstellar travel is not practical. a) Traveling at 45 km/s, how long, in years, would...

    f) in vacuum, light travels at about 186,282 miles per second. One mile is about 161 kilometers (km). Astronomers prefer to use units of distance that are reasonable in describing how far objects are from Earth. For example, for distances in the solar system we use the astronomical unit (AU), which is equal to the average distance of Earth from the Sun; 1 AU is about 150 million km. For distances to stars and galaxies, astronomers use the light-year (1...
