Answer #1

here,

speed of boat , v1 = 10 mph i

speed of wind , v2 = 20 mph j

the speed of wind relative to sailor , v21 = v2 - v1

v21 = - 10 mph i + 20 mph j

a)

the speed of boat , |v| = sqrt(v1^2 + v2^2)

|v| = sqrt(10^2 + 20^2) = 22.4 mph

b)

the direction , theta = arctan(20/10)

theta = 63.4 degree North of West

    You sail a boat due north with a speed of vo 8 knots. TheTell-tale, which shows the direction of the wind relative to the boat, points due east. Your boat then turns and sails due east at the same speed. The tell-tale now points 53 degrees north of west. What is the wind speed (relative to earth)? [The units for your answer will be knots. Enter your answer to one decimal place.] 0o Tell-tale

    A device that is used to measure wind speed is called an anemometer. When it measures the wind on a moving object the measured value is called the apparent wind. A boat carries onboard an anemometer and measures the apparent wind velocity as 30 km/h, coming from an apparent direction of 15◦ east of north. At that time the boat is traveling at 16 km/h at 55◦ east of north relative to the ground. What is the magnitude and direction...
