What is the meaning of the word "glory" within this context?
“I may therefore conclude, that the passion of laughter is nothing else but a sudden glory arising from sudden conception of some eminency in ourselves, by comparison with the infirmities of others, or with our own formerly: for men laugh at the follies of themselves past, when they come suddenly to remembrance, except they bring with them any present dishonour. It is no wonder therefore that men take it heinously to be laughed at or derided, that is, triumphed over…”
From Thomas Hobbes,
The Elements of Law (1640);
Vol. I, “Human Nature” Ch. 9, §13
Here in this context writer wants to tell that-
You feel glory when you feel that you are on top among all or you are just best in the queues of people.
People want to feel glorious and others to infirmity so that they can glad and feel superior and glories. He remember his silly things and dishonored moments but people do not want to remember where he had been mocked . People do not want to be mocked at.
In short he always to feel best, superior among all and do not want to face any disregard from any one.
Thanks
