Ending merchandise inventory means the units which are not sold at the end of accounting period. Generally companies purchase inventory at various intervals. And some of the the units are left behind after selling to customers. Such left behind units are called ending merchandise inventory units.

Lets take an example

Amazon bought 3 playstations at $100 each. And sold 2 playstations.

Now the ending inventory will be 1 playstation. (3-2)

The cost of such ending inventory would be (1 * $100) = $100
