3. Consider a Phase II clinical trial designed to investigate the effectiveness of a new drug to reduce symptoms of asthma in children. A total of n=10 participants are randomized to receive either the new drug or a placebo. Participants are asked to record the number of episodes of shortness of breath over a 1 week period following receipt of the assigned treatment. The data are shown below.

Placebo: 7, 2, 10, 5, 12

New Drug: 3, 6, 4, 11, 1

Is there a difference in the number of episodes of shortness of breath over a 1 week period in participants receiving the new drug as compared to those receiving the placebo? By inspection, it appears that participants receiving the placebo have more episodes of shortness of breath, but is this statistically significant? We wish to test the following hypothesis test.

H0: The two populations are equal

vs

HA: The two populations are not equal

Conduct a Wilcoxon rank sum test and compute the observed test statistics and p-value. Draw a conclusion using α = 0.05.

    6. A clinical trial is being planned to investigate the effect of a new experimental drug designed to reduce total serum cholesterol. Investigators will enroll participants with total cholesterol levels between 200-240, they will be randomized to receive the new drug or a placebo and followed for 2 months, and the total cholesterol will be measured. Investigators plan to estimate a confidence interval with a difference of 8 points in mean total cholesterol levels between groups. They assume that 10%...

One group of 100 patients was given a pill containing the drug, while the other group of 100 was given a placebo. What can we conclude about the effectiveness of the drug if 62 of those actually taking the drug felt a beneficial effect, while 41 of the patients taking the placebo felt a beneficial effect? A)...

    7. A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a new drug for treating Stage 4 AIDS patients. A group of AIDS patients was randomly divided into two groups. One group received the new drug; the other group received a placebo. The difference in mean subsequent survival (those with drugs - those without drugs) was found to be 1.04 years and a 95% confidence interval was found to be 1.04 ± 2.37 years.
