One key concept of communication is perception. In perception, one goes through the process of selection, organization, interpretation and negation. Example of such perception is gender roles. There are socially approved ways men and women are supposed to behave. People tend to label each other on first encounter. This effect is called halo effect.
In the movie "You've got mail" in which Joe and Kathleen are assumed to have similar values due to similarities in occupation. This is stereotyping, however both have different ideas on how a bookstore should operate. Kathleen prefers a small intimate business while Joe prefers large bookstore, to display success. There is continued struggle in the movie due to this.
