Earth's crust is divided into 7 lithospheric plates. These
plates are of two major types. Continental plates carry continental
lithosphere over them, whereas, oceanic plates carry the major
oceans of the earth over them. At the junction of these plates they
deform the plate they are interacting with. One of the major plate
boundaries which is of global importance is the plate boundary at
which the great Himalaya is situated. This is the plate boundary
between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. About 50 million
years ago these two plates collided with each other and formed the
formidable mountain range now known as the Himalaya. This mountain
range has not formed completely till now. Rather the height of this
mountain range is still increasing every day. So, many tectonic
activities take place at this location. Of these tectonic
activities the most devastating ones are the earthquakes. Himalaya
has been the home for many higher magnitude earthquakes. These
earthquakes have totally disrupted the local life which have grown
over the years at a glance. Most recent of these earthquakes was
the Nepal earthquake. Not only the earthquakes, landslides and
violent mountain flash floods are also some sources of serious
perils for the civilization in this region. The tough climatic
conditions of the mountain range itself is the biggest challenge
for the local people and animals, moreover the tectonic activity
makes it harder for them to survive in these situations.
