3. The equation for the magnetic field of a solenoid given in your book, B = μ0nI, is oversimplified. What assumption is made and how is this different than what you have in lab?

1. A coil with many circular close turns of insulated copper wire is a solenoid. One end of such a solenoid behaves like the north pole and the other as a south pole. Therefore magnetic field due to current in the solenoid is similar to a bar magnet.

2. Magnetic field intensity v/s position at the axis of solenoid.

3. Assumption .

i) Magnetic field outside is zero.

ii) Magnetic field inside the magnet is uniform, both in direction and magnitude.

iii) Length of solenoid is very large.

In Lab, Length is finite and small, Magnetic field inside is not uniform and outside it is not zero.
