Valence electrons are found by the group the element is in. Se and S are in group 6. so 6 electrons times 4 = 24 valence electrons

next find the number of electrons needed to fill the elements to a perfect octet. so 4 times 8 gives us

= 32 electrons to fill the octets

Next find the number of bonding electrons by subtracting the valence electrons from the electrons needed to fill the octets. SO 32 electrons - 24electrons

= 8 bonding electrons

Now assinge bonding electsons 2 per bond starting with single bonds then adding double bonds as needed. then fill in the remaing electrons to fill outthe elements octets (lone pair electrons).

= 18 lone pair electrons
