If you look at a Periodic Table you will find Sr in Period 5. It is also in Group IIA The first 2 group represents the electrons in the " s " orbitals . Therefore. Sr has 2 outer electrons in its 4s2 orbital you look at # 40, Zr it is in the transition elements . Its outer orbitals are 5s2, and 3d2. So it has 2 valences of 2+ and 4+. as either 2 or 4 of the electrons can be donated to make +ive ions.
