Question

Four wires

uploaded imageThe four wiresthat lie at the corners of a square of side a= 5.60 cm are carrying equal currents i= 2.50 A into (+) or out of (-) the page, as shown in the picture.

a) Calculate the y component of the magnetic field at the center of the square.

b) Calculate the x-component of the force on a 1.0-cm long piece of the lower right-hand wire, due to the other three wires.

Please show all work! I will rate very well! Thanks!

Answer #1

a) y component at the center of the square = 4x ((μoI/2πR)) cos(45) = 3.57 x 10^-5 T;R=a√2/2

b) x component of the force is caused by y component mag netic field caused by other wires

= (μoI/2π(a√2)) cos45 - (μoI/2πa) (+ve y direction)

= -μoI/2π(2a) = 4.464 x 10^-6 T

hence now the force = (ixB)L ( i is into and B is in negative y => force in +ve x ( right hand rule))

= 2.5 x 4.464x10^-6 x 10x10^-2 =1.116 x 10^-6 N
