Question

Dimensional Motion with Constant Acceleration

A jet plane lands with a speed of 100m/s and can accelerate at a maximum rate of -5.00m/s squared as it comes to rest. (a) From the instant the plane touches therunway, what is the minimum time needed before it can come to rest? (b) Can this plane land on a small tropical island airport where the runway is 0.800km long?

Answer #1
initial velocity v = 100 m/s, a = -5.00m/s2, final velocity = 0
a) t = (0 - v)/a = 20.0 s
b) displacement d = (0 - v2)/(2a) = 1000 m = 1.000km
this plane can'tland on a small tropical islandairport where the runway is 0.800kmlong.

An airplane (mass 80000kg) has a thrust of 160000N. a) Estimate the work needed to reach the take-off speed of 60m/s from rest? Neglect air drag and rolling resistance, assuming that the acceleration is constant. You can calculate this in 2 ways: calculate the distance and determine the energy, or use the kinetic energy difference. Do it both ways! b) How long is the minimum runway, assuming a safety factor of 2. Compare this value to the shorter runway at...
