Chapter 12, Problem 22

As the drawing shows, two thin strips of metal are bolted together at one end and have the same temperature. One is steel, and the other is aluminum. The steel stripis 0.095% longer than the aluminum strip. By how much should the temperature of the strips be increased, so that the strips have the same length?

Answer #1

Δl/l = 0.095

0.095 =α(al)ΔT

0.095 = 22.2 x 10-6xΔT

ΔT = 4.279 x 103

    1. (3 points) A capacitor consisting of rolled insulator and metal thin strips needs to have a ca- pacitance of 20 nF. The positive and negative terminals are attached to two separate aluminum strips, which act as the parallel plates, and paper, which acts as the insulator is inserted between these. For paper, e 3.5o, and the thickness is 0.050mm. Find the required length of the layered aluminum/paper strip. The width of the layered aluminum/paper strip is 2.0cm. Note that...

    Thin strips of brass and copper of equal length are used to construct a bimetallic strip. When the strip is heated, due to the difference in the coefficient of linear expansion of the two metals, the brass strip will have a greater increase in length than the copper strip, causing them to bend into an arc with the brass on the outside of the curve. When the temperature of s by 25.8 C, the angle subtended by the two ends...

    Problem 1 (20 points) It has been noted that the more a metal has been cold worked, the less it strain hardens. Explain why. b) Two parts have been made of the same material, but one was formed by cold working and the other by hot working. Explain the differences you might observe between the two. c) Utilizing coldworking, a strip of metal is reduced from 40mm in thickness to 20mm; a similar strip is reduced in a similar way...

    [e]. Consider 2 metallic strips A (top) and B (bottom) of identical length (D, width (w) and thickness (see the sketch below). Strip A has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion compared to strip B. The strips are bonded together and the temperature is raised by AT>0. What shape will the two strips take? Show it with a sketch. Also, will they have thermal stresses? If so, specify the stress state in each strip. When attempting this problem, assume that...

    Original Temp = 22 degrees C 3. An aluminum ring has an inner diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of a steel rod. The aluminum ring is heated so that it expands sufficiently to fit over the steel rod and cooled so that it makes a tight fit. Because aluminum expands and contracts at a greater rate than steel, the system should be heated. The diameter of steel rod is 4.040 cm and the diameter of the aluminum ring is...
