Question

partial pressure

A mixture of neon, argon, and xenon had a total pressure of 1560 mm Hg at 298 K. The mixture was found to contain 1.50 mol Ne, 2.65 mol Ar, and 1.75 mol Xe. What isthe partial pressure of Xe?

Answer #1

Use the formula P1 = Ptotal . X1

Where P1 = partial pressure of a gas, Ptotal = total pressure of gas mixture, and X1 = mole fraction of a gas

The problem tells you Ptotal = 1560 mmHg

Find the mole fraction by dividing the moles of Xe by the total moles

X1 = 1.75 / (1.75 + 1.50 + 2.65)

X1 = 1.75 / 5.90

X1 = 0.297

Plug in the variables into P1 = Ptotal . X1

P1 = (1560)(0.297)

P1 = 463 mmHg <-- partial pressure of Xe
