It is indeed important to understand and master the differences between different levels of formal or informal diction that are appropriate or inappropriate for different circumstances. Most people are not likely to speak to their peers or classmates the same way that they speak to their grandparents or family members. Also, writing a letter to a friend may differ from the way a job application is sent across. These differences are part of levels of formality. The writing or speaking should thus be dependent on the context within which it is written or spoken. Colloquial writing is seldom appropriate for academic, business or legal writing. If one is quoting someone directly, it can be appropriate, but one needs to be mindful of the tone used. Informal language tries to capture some of the flow of everyday speech. It broadly adheres to the rules of standard English, but imprecise word choice and contractions are acceptable, so long as the meaning is clear. It generally uses complete sentences, but some use of sentence fragments is common. Informal writing is meant for a broad audience. The purpose is to express a personal idea, for instance through a blog. Formal on the other hand includes writing for someone who is already familiar with the theme or purpose. It involves specialized used of specific vocabulary. Similarly semi-formal is in between the two wherein a mixed of formal and informal can be used in a context dependent manner.
