Ferrocene is synthesised from the reaction of cyclopentadiene with sodium hydroxide (KOH) in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) to form cyclopentadienyl anion followed by reaction with iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate (FeCl2.4H2O) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to form ferrocene molecule.
