Question: In the general chemistry lab, students synthesize aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. In the lab, students use sulfuric acid as a catalyst, but I want to consider an alternate method for synthesizing aspirin using sodium acetate as a catalyst:

a. Draw the structure of sodium acetate. Is sodium acetate a stronger or weaker base than sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Explain. (1.5 pts)
b. Consider the structure of salicylic acid. It contains two potentially acidic hydrogens. Which hydrogen is more acidic and why (ie which hydrogen will be deprotonated first by sodium acetate)? (1.5 pts)
c. Give the complete arrow-pushing mechanism of the reaction of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride in the presence of sodium acetate. Hints: (1) Because sodium acetate is a base, your reaction mechanism should not contain any species with positive charge. (2) There is an intermediate in this reaction that is a “mixed anhydride”. Feel free to look that up. (5 pts)
