Healthcare is a Right
Healthcare is, and should be, a fundamental right to all human beings. There are various reasons why Healthcare should be considered a right ranging from philosophical to logical. The philosophical reasons refer, in some way or the other, to health neither is nor should be a product of the financial strength of a person or a community. The logical argument considers that good health is a direct or indirect product of other basic human rights like availability of safe drinking water, food, housing, education, good sanitation, and safe working conditions. In other words, availability of these basic human rights determines health outcomes, and therefore, healthcare should be a right.
Healthcare is a Privilege
Advancements in healthcare are a result of research by companies, organizations and governments. All these efforts take money. This is the starting point of why healthcare is a privilege – because money needs to be generated from somewhere to fund these advancements. Also, better healthcare for self and for family is the single greatest motivation factor for almost all human beings on earth. If healthcare is made a right, there are high chances this motivation may be lost.
Personally, I believe that healthcare is a right for all human beings. I completely buy in to the points made above. Moreover, in opposition to the points provided in favor of healthcare as a privilege, I firmly believe that there exists a fine balance between who pays and who receives. Big corporations do have social responsibility towards the very people who are their employees, suppliers and customers, or simply their neighbors (land acquisition for building factories is a classic case here). Therefore, funding healthcare research and delivery should be a joint prerogative of governments, social organizations and businesses. This is the only way the nation can move forward.
