Answer #1

Ans A) In wastewater, nitrogen is present mainly in form of Ammonia (NH3).The process of removal of nitrogen is known as nitrification.It is two step process as follows:

NH3 ---> NH4---> NO2---> NO3

Stoichiometrically , 4.56 pounds of oxygen is required to remove 1 pound of nitrogen, so oxygen required for removal of 1000 lb of nitrogen :

Oxygen required = 1000 x 4.56

= 4560 lb

Ans B) 7.15 lb alkalinity required for 1lb of Nitrogen , so 1000 lb require :

1000 x 7.15

= 7150 lb alkalinity

Ans C) 1 lb of nitrogen requires 0.08 lb of sCOD so 1000 lb requires,

0.08 x 1000

= 80 lb sCOD

    1. An aqueous waste stream in a metal finishing plant has a flow rate of 1000 gal/d and contains 100 ppm of ionic copper (i.e., Cu2+). The waste stream has a very low pH of 0.3 because concentrated nitric acid is used in one of the etching processes. Engineers plan to treat the waste stream with slaked lime and raise the pH up to circumneutral. (a) Assuming nitric acid completely dissociates to H+ under these conditions, what concentration of HNO3...

    You are in charge of a combustion furnace. The furnace is fed an air stream and a methane stream which is combusted to produce heat that is used to boil water and produce steam for your plant. The combustion of fuels using an air stream which contains nitrogen generally produces significant amounts of NO, compounds which are an air pollutant, so the exhaust gases must generally be removed through various processes. In this case, your furnace exhaust is passed through...

    Thermal pollution in wastewater. A 1000-MW coal-fired power plant with an efficiency of 35% uses water from a neighboring stream (with flow of 75 m3/s and 20°C) to carry away waste heat. About 12% of waste heat goes up in the smokestack; the remaining 88% is taken away by cooling water.
