Simple squamous epithelial tissue is located in alveoli, glomeruli and lymphatic capillaries, air sacs of lungs, and lining of heart and blood vessels where rapid diffusion occurs. It occurs where small molecules pass quickly through membrane via diffusion or filtration. The cells are thin so it permits diffusion.

Cells are flattened with oblong nuclei. Due to its tile like appearance it is called pavement epithelium.
