Chapter 9, Section 3, Exercise 060 Two intervals are given, A and B, for the same value of the explanatory variable. A: 3.5 to 7.9; B: 2.9 to 8.5; (a) Which interval is the confidence interval for the mean response? Which interval is the prediction interval for the response? (b) What is the predicted value of the response variable for this value of the explanatory variable? Enter the exact answer. The predicted value is .

ANSWER:

Prediction interval is always wider as compared to confidence interval.

Interval B is wider than interval of A

A) Confidence interval of the mean response: A

Prediction interval of the mean response: B

b) Predicted value of response variable

= Mean of confidence interval bounds or mean of prediction interval bounds [They both will be same]

= ( 3.5 +7.9 ) / 2 or ( 2.9+ 8.5 ) / 2

= 5.7
