I am getting confused about the formulas for variation explained by x.

I thought that this was equal to r^2, but later on in my lecture notes it says that variation explained by x is given by SSM = SST - SSE = b^2 times Sxx but this equals r^2 times SST.

Please could you clarify for me the formulas for variation explained by x (SSM), the total variation (SST) and the error variation (SSE) and where I am going wrong in my understanding?
