Need some help. What is the unknown counpund? What is the Index if Hydrogen Defincienct ?Is the carbonyl stretch at 1692 a ketone or an aldehyde? The stretch at 1632 and 2972 is indicative of a alkene, correct? is there an OH present? if you can please explain the H-NMR, what type of proton and how many protons does it represent.

Answer #1

The unknown compound could be as right as written (E) pent-2-enal .

The carbonyl stretch at 1692 usually represents an amide group but it can be aldehyde or ketone due to the presence of conjugation thus lowering the streching frequency.

Alkene (C=C) stretches appear around 1,660 cm–1, and are of either weak or medium intensity .

As there is no broad band present , this indicates the absence of alcoholic group.

There are 4 kinds of hydrogen present- 1st will be the aldehydic proton which will occur at 9-10 ppm , 2nd one will be the hydrogen preesnt on the sp2 carbons , they will lie in the alkene region with 4.5 -6.5 ppm with trans coupling, 3rd one will be the of the carbon CH2 which will lie near 3.8 ppm due to the presence of alkenic bonds and 4th one will be the hydrogens of methyl group which have its chemical shift around 1.2 ppm.
