Contamination caused by leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) is among the most widespread issues threating the drinking water quality in the US. LUSTs contain not only petroleum products like diesel fuel and gasoline, but also other contaminants of concern like lead (Pb), methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), and ethanol (EtOH), and other oxygenated compounds added to petroleum fuel. Please briefly review the solubility/hydrophilicity, biodegradability, and toxicity of Pb, MTBE, and EtOH, and discuss how each compound may affect the biodegradation of petroleum products (e.g BTEX) in the subsurface once a spill take place.
