On average over time, about 4 new stars form every year in our Galaxy. That is, about 4 protostars reach the zero-age main sequence and start burning hydrogen. Assuming that it takes 1.5 million years for a recognizable protostar to reach the ZAMS, once it is formed, how many protostars are there at any one time in our Galaxy?

Answer #1

age of milky way = 13.51 billion years

= 13510 million years

4 stars each year = 54.04 billion stars born in total

now after 1.5 million years a star reaches ZAMS

so first star reached ZAMS at t= 1.5 mYears

after that number of new star born= number of stars reaching ZAMS

so total number of protostar = 1.5×4 = 6 million
