Chem 421, Experiment #8 Experiment 8 The Grignard Reaction used in the Synthesis of 2-PhenyL-2-Propanol Objective: To synthesize 2-phenyl-2-propanol using the Grignard reaction. Background: This laboratory exercise introduces the student to the Grignard reaction in the synthesis of a 3" alcohol, 2-phenyl-2-propanol. но 1. Mg /THF / heat 2. acetone 3. dilute acid quench Br It is expected you have a solid understanding of all the work-up and purification procedures used in this experiment. You should refer to the appendix of this lab manual and read the sections on boiling point/distillation theory, IR theory, and gas-chromatography if you need a review. Cen This reaction is performed in the hood because flammable solvents are used. You must show up to class on time since all students will be starting together and need to link their water hoses together Students arriving late will not be permitted to perform this lab and will forfeit the points. Wet glassware will interfere with this reaction. If you did not clean your glassware during lab last time, you will need to clean it now, and exchange it for dry glassware from the stockroom. You need to get through step 35 of this experiment on the first day. Safety: Warning: this lab uses tetrahydrofuran; an extremely volatile and flammable solvent absolutely no flames during this reaction. Consult the MSDS binders in the lab for information on the chemicals if you have concerns. MSDS information is also available on the internet.

Which starting matrial, solvent and reagent should I use to get 1-phenyl-1-propanol? Grignard Addition VCL 10-1: Grignard Addition - 1 For this assignment, the target compound that you should synthesize is 1-phenyl-1-propanol. This is an organometallic addition reaction. Examine the product and identify potential bonds that may be formed. Keep in mind the mechanism and the need to quench the reaction with acid to liberate the neutral product. Synthesis Procedures 1. please answer the prelab excercise:) I tried doing it but I did not get very far Experiment 7: Grignard Reaction. Introduction Discovered by French chemist Victor Grignard, the reaction that now bears his name is an example of the preparation of an organometallic reagent. In this lab, phenylmagnesium bromide is the Grignard of interest, and it will be added to an aldehyde to produce an alcohol. Lab Objectives 1. To study organometallic reagents in general. benzophenone. 2. To prepare phenylmagnesium...

Grignard Reaction with a Ketone: Triphenylmethanol Introduction: The purpose of this lab is to prepare phenylmagnesium bromide, a Grignard reagent, and react it with benzophenone to give triphenylmethanol. Grignard reagents are very reactive and must be synthesized in an environment free of water or any other source of potential proton donor. Once made, the Grignard reagent will do a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of the ketone, benzophenone. The result is an alkoxide that is then protonated to give...

Organic chemistry post-lab question: "Why is important to add the alkyl halide dropwise in your reaction? (Hint: your reaction is not heated, but you still need a water-cooled condenser!)" Please answer in detail! Here is a copy of the experiment, thank you! The Grignard reaction is an important synthetic process by which a carbon-carbon bond is formed. Magnesium metal is first reacted with an organic halide. The resultant organo-magnesium halide (Grignard reagent) is then combined with a carbonyl compound, ultimately...
