Answer #1

Part 1.

[(CH3CH2)4N]2CoCl4 is an electrolyte because it can give 3 ions in the solution: the coordination sphere contains [CoCl4]2- ion and the ionization sphere contains 2 (CH3CH2)4NH+ ions, so a total of 3 ions.

Part 2.

[Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2, [Co(NH3)6]Cl3, [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2 undergo ionization isomerism, as shown below.

(i) [(CH3CH2)4N]2CoCl4 involves [CoCl4]2- complex ion, which adapts tetrahedral geometry for the Co2+ ion.

(ii) [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2, [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl.NH3, [Co(NH3)3Cl3].2NH3 are the ionization isomers and the initial and final oxidation state of Cobalt is the same, i.e. +3.

(iii) [Co(NH3)6]Cl3, [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2.NH3, [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl.2NH3, [Co(NH3)3Cl3].3NH3 are the ionization isomers and the initial and final oxidation state of Cobalt is the same, i.e. +3.

(iv) [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2, [Ni(NH3)5Cl]Cl.NH3, [Ni(NH3)4Cl2].2NH3 are the ionization isomers and the initial and final oxidation state of Cobalt is the same, i.e. +2.

    a) Explain how electron transfer takes place between the complexes in oxidation-reduction reactions related to inner-sphere and outer-sphere mechanisms, respectively. b) You are told that the oxidation-reduction reaction between [Co(NH3)6]^3+ and Ru(NH3)6^2+ takes place via outer sphere electron transfer and the rate constant is 1.1 x 10^–2. However, if instead of Ru(NH3)6^2+, [Cr(bipy)3]^2+ is the reductant then rate constant is much higher, 6.9 x 10^2. Explain the reason.
