Understanding the full lifecycle of a project is key for a project manager to keep "things in perspective". Describe one area in the PMBOK flowchart that is the key to be a successful Project Manager.

There are ten Knowledge Areas in the PMBOK flowchart. They are Integration Management, Scope Management, Schedule Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Resource Management, Communications Management, Risk Management, Procurement Management and Stakeholder Management. It also has 5 process groups that are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling and control. Knowledge Areas are made up of processes. Knowledge Areas cover the important things project manager ought to know. Process Groups is application of it.

Managing integration: It is most important area. Projects should not operate in silos. Rather the project manager needs to unify or synchronize all kind of project activities so that it operates in a collective manner. It includes working on project charter and blueprint of project, managing project work, monitoring and controlling changes in the projects and closing projects / phases.

  • Project charter sets project goals and a strong business need for the same and give authorization to the project manager. It includes assumption log.
  • The plan of project is related to its management. All ten areas mentioned above are included in it and majority of processes are employed to form it. Thus plan is an active document and is constantly updated as the project faces any changes, revisions, adjustments in cost, money, schedule or requirements.
  • Routine Project activities of directing, problem solving, conducting meetings comes under it.
  • During the operation of project vital information and knowledge get uncovered that needs to be stored for future projects. The knowledge transfer is performed under this process.
  • The status of the project is monitored and controlled to ensure it doesn’t deviates from standards of the plan. Project manager uses earned value analysis to determine the cost and timeliness of project regularly. It helps in keeping projects on track.
  • Change management: Any change in requirement of the project is minutely processed to ouster “scope creep”. It requires stakeholders’ approval and authorization from organization.
  • Closing of Project or Phase: It is finalization that takes form of inspections of deliverables, customer approvals for it and all documentation, release of resources and personnel, and contract closures.
