Aspartate and glutamate residues undergo hydrogen bonding with the base pairs easily because they bear a close resemblance to the hydrogen bonding between complementary base pairs(adenine-thymine and guanine-cytosine). hydrogen bonding is more dependent on the geometry/ orientation of the side chain groups. Aspartate and Glutamate residues have carboxyl group and mimic cytosine, so these residues are not repelled by the phosphate backbone of DNA. These residues make two hydrogen bonds with N1 and N2 hydrogen bond donors groups of guanine.
