When you add chloride to hydrogen and oxygen one series reaction consists of two parts will happen.

Chloride will react with hydrogen to form hydrogen chloride first then the formed hydrogen chloride will reacts with oxygen to form water and chlorine gas.

The reaction between hydrogen and chloride to forms hydrogen chloride happens first , since the activation energy needed for that reaction is lesser than the other reaction.
