The City Engineer for the town of Alliance, located at the southern end of the Wildcat Mountains in western Nebraska, has been tasked to design a smooth rectangular drainage channel to drain the water that will run off the new industrial complex being constructed just west of town. The channel must run ten miles before it empties into the east flowing Niobrara River. For the first six miles the water is to be 3.0 meters in depth with a velocity of 7 feet per second. However, the bottom of the channel needs to be raised up at the six-mile mark to accommodate a buried oil pipeline.
