Answer #1

a)

Weld size=3/8=6/16

D=6

Load=150 kips

Let length of weld required be l

1.392*6*l=150

l=17.96~=18 inches

Minimum 18 in weld length is required

b)

Weld length=10 in on each side

Weld size=1/2"=8/16"

D=8

Capacity of weld of one side=1.392*8*10=111.36 in

Applied load =P

Eccentricity=5 in from centroid

This is like a simply supported beam with overhang wherein welds are supports and load is acting at overhang

Shear on weld nearer to the load =P*(5+2)/4=1.75P

1.75P=111.36

P=63.6 kips

Therefore maximum allowable P=63.6 kips
