Circle and name functional groups. Predict the water solubility of each molecule. Please explain and show your work.
Functional groups capable of forming hydrogen bonding with water are water soluble. e.g: -OH, -COOH, -NH2 etc. are water soluble.
A: A contains functional groups cyclic ether(R-O-R), tertiary amine (-N-), and amide (CONH-). All of these groups are not water soluble. Hence this is insoluble in water.
B: A contains functional groups ether (R-O-R), carbon=carbon double bond, Ester (RCOOR'), amide (CO-NH-) and primary amine (-NH2). Although -NH2 is quite soluble in water, due to the presence of bulky hydrophobic carbon chains, it is very ver less soluble in water.
Between A and B, B is more soluble in water.
