Salicylic acid can be re-crystallized from methanol and water mixture. The test tube containing salicylic acid and methanol is treated with a small amount of water and heated when a homogenous solution results. The solution is then gradually cooled to room temperature when salicylic acid crystallizes out from the solution. The crystals are collected by vacuum filtration, washed and dried.

The purity of the compound obtained via crystallization can be ascertained in a number of ways. The simplest technique to ascertain the purity of a crystallized compound is to check the boiling point of the crystals. The melting point of pure salicylic acid is around 158.6ºC. If the crystals are pure, then the crystallized compound will melt over a sharp and narrow temperature, say between 157-159ºC. Impure compounds melt over a large temperature range.

The IR or the NMR spectrum of the crystallized compound can also be used to determine the purity of the crystals.
