18 carbon fatty acids will require : (18/2) -1 = 8 rounds of beta oxidation

Each round makes 1 NADH and 1 FADH2 , so total : 8 NADH , 8 FADH2 , and in all 9 Acetyl CoA is made.

NADH gives 2.5 ATP per molecule , FADH2 = 2.5 ATP and Acetyl CoA = 10 ATP

2 ATP is required for activation of fatty acid

So total energy yield :

= 9 (10) + 8(2.5 ) + 8(1.5) - 2

= 90 + 20 + 12 - 2

= 120 ATP

Now 3 double bonds are present , so three FADH2 are formed less

So total ATP yield :

= 120 ATP - 3(1.5 ATP)

= 115.5 ATP
