Problem 2) Consider six bars numbered 1 through 6. The ends of each bar are labeled A and B, and the middle of each bar is labeled m. Assume that any bars that are magnets have their poles on the ends A and B. A student makes the following observations: 2m interacts with 4A 1A is attracted to 2B 3B does not interact with 6B 4B is repelled by 6A. 2A interacts with 6m 5A is attracted to 4B. 5B is attracted to 6A.
В 6 Bar 3 В 5 Bar 4 Bar 1 Bar 2 2a) (6 points) Classify the six objects using the three classes for materials that we discussed in class (i.e. magnets, ferromagnetic materials (e.g., mostly metals) and non-ferromagnetic materials (e.g., most non-metals).) If you cannot decide to which class an object belongs, list more than one class for that object. Object 2 is Object 1 is Object 4 is Object 3 is Object 6 is Object 5 is 2b) (4 points) Explain your reasoning for the answers in the previous section.

Answer #1

2)

4B is repelled by 6A. Only magnets can repel each other in our list of possibilities. So 4 and 6 are magnets.

Poles of 5 that is 5A and 5B are attracted to poles of 4 and 6 of opposite kind. So it must be a magnet. 5 is a magnet.

3B does not interact with 6B. So 3 a non magnetic i.e. non-ferromagnetic material.

2 is ferromagnetic material. As it is interacting with every part of magnets.

1 is magnet because it is attracting a ferromagnetic material 2.

3)

Date

Some field lines will end in the south pole of nearby magnet while some will end in the south pole of same magnet. Compass is very close to particular bar magnets so it will arrange according to that magnet only.
