The United Nations(UN) is a very powerful intergovernmental institution assigned with managing and preserving harmony and protection, establishing amicable connections, accomplishing collaboration and being an intermediary among all the nations of the world. It was established in 1945 and at present comprises a membership of 193 states. The main motive behind establishing the UN was to prevent conflict among various nations.

The United Nations is influential and the sole institution to handle and provide solutions for the conflicts arising among different countries. The UN was first established to promote harmony, safeguard the privileges of human beings, stipulate rules for upholding global justice and also to advance public and financial growth.

But, over the years it has taken up many pressing issues like global warming, the cause of displaced people and also the deadly AIDS. It is no doubt the single most agency which is genuinely concerned about the welfare of human beings and endeavors to find solutions for the various problems the world is facing today.

The UN is very dedicated to the cause of children. The world war II proved detrimental to children who went through a lot of hardships. The UN then took initiative to supply essentials like food, clothes and medical care for the children who were displaced and suffered due to the war. Since then the UNICEF is championing for the well-being of children worldwide. It is also instrumental in formulating the rights of children to get nourishing food, clothing, education, safety and accommodation. The UNICEF has also been successful to deter the warring nations to recruit children in combat. It is also very alert about the crimes perpetrated against children like abuse and violence and has taken steps to prevent the heinous crimes by making effective suggestions and guiding the nations to formulate laws which will safeguard the children.

The AIDS epidemic which killed so many people has really become a menace because of lack of awareness and absence of effective medicines. The UN's agency called the UNAIDS gathers and organizes all resources and efforts from all the countries to fight against the deadly disease. It also strives to decrease the incidence of HIV infections by creating effective programs to increase awareness among people.

The climatic changes over the years are increasing and resulting in many natural disasters like floods, drought, famine and the serious concern of global warming. Most of the changes in the climate are due to the selfish activities of mankind. Human beings are destroying the natural resources like forests, mountains, rivers to meet their ends. The IPCC, an agency of the United Nations researches into the effects of the pursuits of mankind on climate change. The research results are analyzed and solutions to decrease the effects of global warming are sought out.

The refugee problem is perennial and also aggravated due to the constant wars and internal conflicts within a nation which makes its citizens homeless. The homes of the people are destroyed and lack of education and employment opportunities render the people without the basic necessities of life. People are forced to flee their own home country and seek refuge in other countries. The UNHCR, which is an agency of UN works to assist the refugees and ensures the safety of the refugees. The UN also performs many other functions which are very crucial to maintain global peace and unity. It has become an important center of solving the numerous global problems which cannot be solved by any one nation.
