Julie discovers the lamp on the photoelectric apparatus has burned out. After freaking out momentarily, she realizes she can use an electron in an infinite square well of width 0.500 nm as the light source. Using a filter to ensure only the lowest energy photons reach the cathode she determines the stopping potential is 1.84 V. What is the work function of the metal being used in the experiment?

Answer #1

Work function= e\times V_s

where e is the charge of an electron

Vs is the stopping potential

= є × Vs = 1.6 × 10-19 × 1.84 = 2.944 × 10-19 J
