why is aspiration a concern with patients with anoxic brain injury?
Anoxic brain injury occurred when the brain is deprived of oxygen. This will affect the bolus control and linguistic movement. The process of chewing of the bolus is voluntary control which is affected by the limited motion of the jaw and poor secretion by salivary glands. Then the reduced tongue movement triggers the swallowing reflex. Due to this failure of swallowing reflex, the nasal cavity is not closed properly results in aspiration. Sometimes the food entered into the esophagus will not move towards the stomach due to lack of peristaltic movement and the back-up of food content results in aspiration. So aspiration is concerned as important things to avoid major complications.
as a nurse how do we evaluate a patient who has an anoxic brain injury?
Describe pathophysiology, risks, clinical manifestations, evaluation, and treatment of anoxic brain injury and expected outcomes.
QUESTION 18 Increased intracranial pressure in patients with traumatic brain injury is associated with a higher mortality rate and poor outcome. Mannitol and hypertonic saline (HTS) have both been used to treat high intracranial pressure, but it is unclear which one is more effective. Here, the authors compare the effect of mannitol versus HTS on lowering the daily intracranial pressure burden after severe traumatic brain injury. The reduction of intracranial pressure for 35 patients who received only HTS was 6...
A nursing home resident who sustained a hypoxic brain injury eight years ago was hospitalized with increasing respiratory failure and fever due to bilateral aspiration pneumonia and severe sepsis. The patient has recurrent seizures due to the old intracranial injury, with loss of consciousness from an accidental fall. Final diagnoses: (1) Severe sepsis, (2) aspiration pneumonia, (3) acute respiratory failure, (4) recurrent seizures due to old intracranial injury. Assign the appropriate codes
