Traumatic Brain Injury in Young Athletes: Prevention and Recognition Are Key "Brain injury is one of the most common forms of disability: impacting the lives of millions of people every year. It is also one of the least understood." —epigraph from Brain Injury Dialogues Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can be an agonizing, and invisible, torment for those who have sustained one. Any hit to the head or any circumstance that creates movement of or pressure on the brain can cause a TBI. Young athletes can be prone to their dangers, with resulting impairment, both physical and emotional. Too often these injuries are not taken seriously enough, and athletes return to contact sports sooner than they should. The consequences of sustaining another blow to the head on top of the initial one can be not only devastating but also potentially deadly. Steps must be taken to ensure that children in youth and high school athletic programs are protected from TBI when possible, and cared for appropriately should a TBI occur. The terminology around TBI can be confusing. Doctors may refer to the injury as a head injury, closed head injury, brain injury, concussion, or traumatic brain injury (Christensen 8-9).
