During a routine physical checkup, a 50-year-old woman is advised to get tested for a virus with a high prevalence in her age-group. To her surprise, the test comes back positive. The virus, which damages the liver, is known to be transmitted by sexual contact, needle stick, and tattoos conducted under unsanitary conditions. The patient can recall none of these behaviors, although it is hard to be certain of events from decades before. What is the pathogen?
