Culturally safe and respectful practice is not a new concept in nursing. Nurses and midwives are expected to engage with all people as individuals in a culturally safe and respectful way, foster open, honest and compassionate professional relationships, and adhere to their obligations about privacy and confidentiality (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2018).

Many health services already provide cultural safety training for their staff. Cultural safety is about the person who is providing care reflecting on their own assumptions and culture in order to work in a genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2018).

Therefore, the purpose of this assignment requires you to discuss cultural safety from an Aboriginal perspective and how this can be incorporated into your nursing care.

  1. Define the principles of cultural safety and discuss the cultural considerations required when caring for an Aboriginal person and link them to the provision of culturally safe nursing care.

  1. Identify the nursing guidelines in relation to cultural safety when caring for an Aboriginal person and outline the importance of ethical decision making within culturally safe nursing care.

This assignment is to be written in third person. The use of short subheadings is permitted within the essay format and can be useful as they can guide the marker to avoid confusion and loss of marks.

P.S.:Is there any way out where I can upload my other required assessment details?Since they are too long to copy and paste. Thanks!!

Answer #1

Social determinants of the health are considered as the economic, social and political and environmental conditions that influence an individual's health status.

Cultural safety is an approach to nursing/midwifery practices that require an understanding of the self and the power dynamics of the profession, along with a recognition of the systems and structures in the context that impact clients.

Cultural safety is the outcome of education that enables safe services to be defined by who receive the service.

Decolonization is the process of ending colonization and challenging its continuing effects, to allow self-determination for indigenous people. It involves appreciating the value of traditional practices and reclaiming them when appropriate. Health gap is the disparity in health outcomes experienced by the different groups in society. In Australia, there are significant health and life expectancy gaps between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

The cultures are the ideas, customs, language, traditions and the special behaviors of a particular group of people. According to the view of Torres Strait Islander people, the determinants of health are considered as the

*Family and kinship

*Culture- Identity

*Relationship with land, sea, and sky

*Religion

# In the recent era the concepts of cultural safety, including cultural awareness and cultural competence, are being introduced into the Australian nursing system through the universities.

It takes a longer time to change the colonial mentality and racist attitude towards Aboriginal people in this country.

If treating the Aboriginal people as equals, the hospital and health systems have a better chance of reducing the morbidity and mortality rates among the Aboriginal people.

# Before 1947, the policies of the past shows that Aboriginal people were wards of the state governments and had no authority over their own lives, thus they are dared to take initiatives by making their own decision. They were considered them as subjugated people, and also shows racism from staff and patients

.\rightarrow Principles of cultural safety

An unsafe cultural practice that demeans and disempowers the cultural identity and well being of an individual. The cultural safety principles include:

*Social and restorative

*Justice

*Equity

*Negotiated partnership

*The universal application and implementation of cultural safety across the workplace.

*Follow the principles of cultural safety in the workplace

*Awareness of importance and applicability of both verbal and non-verbal Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communication styles

*Recognition and respect for cultural obligations, cultural validations and cultural credentialing within cultural safe workplaces.

*Acknowledgement and respect for cultural protocols within gender-specific services

They were shows an even more serious lack of cultural safety for Aboriginal people when receiving or giving nursing care.

# Aboriginal people are the first people in Australia having their own rights, own cultures, customs and protocols

#It needs to be widely recognized that achieving cultural safety in health programs for aboriginal people will advance good health practices and boost up their positive health statistics through the acceptance of their cultural differences while treating or taking care.

# while considering the nursing guidelines in relation to the cultural safety of Aboriginal people :

*We intend to implement programs in the curriculum, that may include Aboriginal studies and protocols for cultural safety in all schools of health.

#Include ethical principles while treating different types of patients from different cultures

#Include the importance of considering the culture during their high school education itself to think about their training career in health

# while treating with the Aboriginal people they have to consider and show gratitude and proves that cultural safety for Aboriginal people can be attained

2. Nursing Guidelines and importance of ethicaldecision making :

*The country and community domain

*Local cultural contextuality

*Recognizing and valuing the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers

*Individual reflection

*Systemic Reflection

*Equity and sustainability

*Collaboration and co-operation

*Monitoring and evaluation

*We intend to implement programs in the curriculum, that may include Aboriginal studies and protocols for cultural safety in all schools of health.

#Include ethical principles while treating different types of patients from different cultures

#Include the importance of considering the culture during their high school education itself to think about their training career in health

# while treating with the Aboriginal people they have to consider and show gratitude and proves that cultural safety for Aboriginal people can be attained

# As well nursing staff has to show respect for a grieving family

# Promote and conduct workshops and seminars that teach cultural awareness

As a nurse, we need to promote the Aboriginal people themselves must change their attitudes to ill health and understand the necessity of maintaining the health by taking adequate treatment and as well as advise from the medical and hospital personnel.

Thus we can promote the Cultural safety in health for the Aboriginal people and can de implement easily and it could work as effective.

Work as a medical and nursing practitioners we have to enhance the practice of cultural safety

Thus implementing and maintaining cultural safety for Aboriginal people improves their wellbeing and survival and should be continued compulsory in the medical practice/health practice of Australia
