If solid magnesium remains, that means your the amount of chlorine used will be less than it actually should be. So, the moles of chlorine required per mole of magnesium will be lower. So, the molar ratio of magnesium and chlorine will be higher and hence in the formula of magnesium chloride, the subscript of Mg will be higher than it is now. In other words, the subscript of Cl will be lower than it is now.
